New York City is gearing up for an expansion of its Citi Bike program, Mayor Eric Adams said, bringing the popular bike share service to underserved neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
Announced earlier this week, the plan will add new docking stations and bikes to meet growing demand while enhancing accessibility for New Yorkers.
The expansion is set to roll out starting in fall 2025 and aims to bring Citi Bike access to an additional 900,000 residents, according to City Hall. Key neighborhoods included in the expansion are Norwood and Riverdale in the Bronx, Brownsville and Bay Ridge in Brooklyn and areas west of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.
Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the program’s importance in making transportation affordable and equitable for all New Yorkers.
“This Citi Bike expansion is the latest way we’re making it easier and more affordable to get around New York City, particularly for low-income New Yorkers,” Adams said in a statement. “People in Brownsville and other low-income neighborhoods deserve Citi Bike access as much as any other New Yorker, and this expansion brings us closer to ensuring just that.”

- Bronx: Norwood, Riverdale.
- Brooklyn: Brownsville, East New York, Kensington, Bay Ridge.
- Queens: Areas west of Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
- New docking stations: 250 additional stations.
- New bikes added: 2,900, with about half being electric bikes.
- Citywide impact: 64% of city residents will live within a five-minute walk of a Citi Bike station after the expansion.
The expansion will also address overcrowding at popular stations in areas like Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg, the city said. Enhanced features like “kioskless” docking stations will add flexibility and increase service capacity.
Citi Bike, launched in 2013, has become one of the city’s most popular transportation options. In 2024, more than 44 million rides were taken, with the system supporting some 1.6 million unique riders, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.
