NYPD officers in the Bronx shot a man in the leg after he pointed a gun at them Friday afternoon, according to police officials.
The uniformed officers had arrived in their unmarked police car to a parking lot on White Plains Road in Soundview at around 3:10 p.m. in response to a 911 call about a fight, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said at a press briefing Friday evening.
Spotting the officers, a man there assumed a “shooting stance,” raising the barrel of a loaded 9mm handgun toward them, Chell said. The officers opened fire, striking him twice in the leg, he said.
“Our officers quickly handcuff the perpetrator, render aid, and he’s removed to the hospital along with our officers,” Chell said.
Police said the man was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was recovering Friday evening. The police officers were treated for tinnitus. Police haven’t yet released the man’s name or said what charges he may be facing.
Another man involved in the fight was still being sought, police said.
The officers involved were assigned to the Neighborhood Safety Team at the 43rd precinct.
