A man was fatally shot and another hospitalized after they were robbed outside an apartment building in the Bronx on Sunday evening, police said.
NYPD officials said that the two men were on the sidewalk outside a building on Seward Avenue near Pugsley Avenue in Castle Hill, and that a few minutes before 6 p.m., they were approached by a suspect who robbed them at gunpoint.
Tyreek Moore, 26, was shot in the back and died after first responders took him to Jacobi Hospital, according to police. The 24-year-old man with him at the time was not shot but experienced pain and bruising to his head, officials said. He was taken to the same hospital in stable condition, and police did not release his name.
Police said the suspect took an iPhone 12, an ID and credit cards from the men before fleeing. Officials said early on Monday that he may have been wearing all black, and that they were not sure if he knew the victims. They have not yet announced any arrests.
Moore lived in Longwood, about 2.5 miles away from the scene of the shooting, police said. Police are still investigating why he was on Seward Avenue during the incident.
Gun violence is trending downward in the NYPD’s 43rd Precinct, which includes much of the South Bronx, NYPD data shows. There were 23 shooting incidents reported so far this year through Dec. 8, compared to 34 in the same time period last year, according to the data.
The two other men who were fatally shot in the precinct this year were Jose Baez, 52, who was shot on July 21, and Sincere Campbell, 17, who was shot on Sept. 21, according to Gothamist’s analysis of police reports.
The NYPD said it arrested 28-year-old Julio Ramirez in connection with Baez’s killing, but it has not announced any arrests in connection with Campbell’s.
Additionally over the weekend, police on Saturday responded to a fatal shooting at the Polo Grounds NYCHA complex in Upper Manhattan. Officials said 47-year-old David Brown was gunned down just before 11 p.m. inside an apartment in one of the buildings on Frederick Douglass Boulevard. He was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, and police made no immediate arrests.
