School bus driver strikes and kills 60-year-old man on Staten Island, police say

A 60-year-old man died after a school bus driver struck him as he was crossing a road on Staten Island on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

According to NYPD officials, 60-year-old Carl Calabro was walking across Slosson Terrace in the St. George neighborhood around 4:37 p.m. when the bus driver turned left from Bay Street and hit him.

The 55-year-old driver stayed at the scene and was not charged, police said. The one child riding the bus at the time was evaluated by emergency medical workers and released to a parent.

Police said Calabro was taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad was still working to determine what factors may have played a role in the accident.

Ten people died in traffic crashes on Staten Island this year through Dec. 8, four fewer than by the same point last year, according to police data.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
