SIU suffers defeat at North Texas, 87-54

DENTON, Tex. — The Southern Illinois University women’s basketball team took a loss on the road Saturday at North Texas, falling by a score of 87-54.

The Salukis shot 40 percent from the field, 35 percent from deep in three-point land, and made 63 percent of their free throws in the loss.

Meanwhile, North Texas shot 56 percent from the field to secure victory.

SIU had 22 turnovers in the game to North Texas’ 12.

Both squads were tied at the end of the first quarter with 16 points apiece, courtesy of a pair of treys in the opening ten minutes, with Tyranny Brown and Kayla Cooper sinking their shots from deep.

The Mean Green began to take the momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Salukis 23-14, leading to the halftime buzzer and being ahead of SIU by nine points.

The hosts continued their dominance in the second half, scoring 48 points to SIU’s 24. The Mean Green scored 24 points in the third quarter to the Salukis’ 18, with Se’Quoia Allmond scoring a team-high nine points in the quarter.

North Texas appeared to be pulling away with the victory with a 24-6 run in the closing quarter of the game, resulting in the 87-54 result.

Allmond led the Salukis with 15 points in the loss. Isabella Palmqvist was the only other Saluki scoring in double-figures, tallying ten points on four of six shooting attempts.

The Salukis will face their sister campus, SIUE, for a road game in Edwardsville on Sunday, December 15.
