Pam Bondi, a longtime Trump supporter and Florida’s first female attorney general, is now Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Justice Department. This big announcement came shortly after Trump’s first pick, Matt Gaetz, stepped aside following allegations of sexual misconduct.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared the news, calling Bondi a “proud Floridian” and praising her nearly 20 years as a tough-on-crime prosecutor. “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals,” Trump said.
Bondi’s Background and Rise to Prominence
Pam Bondi first made her mark in Florida, working as a prosecutor in Hillsborough County for 18 years before stepping into the political spotlight in 2010. Back then, she was relatively unknown but managed to make waves by becoming the state’s attorney general, thanks in part to an endorsement from Sarah Palin. She held the position from 2011 to 2019, a tenure that coincided with some of the most challenging moments in Florida’s recent history.
One of those was the devastating 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, which claimed 49 lives. While Bondi publicly supported the victims, she faced criticism for her past stance against same-sex marriage. Two years later, when a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragically ended 17 lives, Bondi took a firm stance, calling for the shooter’s execution and backing stronger gun laws.
A Close Ally of Trump
Bondi’s connection to Trump is nothing new. Back in 2016, she endorsed him over Florida’s own Marco Rubio during the Republican primary. But her relationship with Trump also brought controversy. In 2013, she personally requested a $25,000 campaign donation from Trump, which came from his family foundation—a move that raised eyebrows because charitable foundations aren’t supposed to fund political campaigns. Around the same time, Bondi decided not to pursue an investigation into Trump’s now-defunct university over fraud allegations.
Years later, Bondi would go on to become one of Trump’s lawyers during his first impeachment trial, where he faced charges related to Ukraine but wasn’t convicted. She’s also been a vocal critic of the cases against Trump, calling the prosecutors “horrible” and accusing them of using the legal system as a weapon.

After Gaetz withdrew from consideration, Trump’s advisers reportedly pointed to Bondi as a strong choice, someone with deep ties to the Republican Party and plenty of experience in Trump’s political orbit. She’s currently a chair at the America First Policy Institute, a think tank founded by former Trump administration staffers.
